Sharpen! | Niagara Portrait Photographer

So, this tip is not really about how to take great pictures … It’s more what you do after you take them.

Ever wonder why your digital images are not as clear as you film images?  It’s because you are taking your memory cards and printing right off of them.  Well … stop it!  Your images could be so much more even if all you do is sharpen them.  You see, everything that comes out of a digital camera is NOT sharp (even if you took your time focusing and everything).  It is the nature of digital photography.  Sorry.  You can, however, have the camera sharpen for you (this is set up in your camera settings), but it really does not do that great of job.

The best way to sharpen is to download your images onto you computer and bring the ones you want to print into Photoshop, or whatever program you are using to edit images, and do something called a defog (because it makes the picture clearer).

To defog your image, you go into Filter - Sharpen and click on Unsharp Mask.  It will ask you to input an Amount (%), Radius and Threshold.  The number are : 14%, 40 and 0 respectively.

There you have just “defoged” your first image.  Very easy to do and the first thing you do in your editing process.  Now, go out there and shoot to your hearts content and make sure you sharpen before you print!
